Character Information
Name: Neku Sakuraba
Source Canon: The World Ends With You
Age: 15
Role In Canon: Protaganist
Justification: There are two main reasons I would like to play Neku here. One of them is the slight change to the character. While Neku’s reasons for being so angry and hating the world aren’t mentioned in canon, it would be very easy as a girl growing up in Japan with that strong of a personality growing bitter about how people treated them and how they were expected to act. I really enjoy taking apart personality aspects like that and trying to figure out what might have cause them, so that oppurtunity is really fun for me. And because the Garden seems to focus on things that are stereotypically girly, it gives me a chance to play her as she’s working out some of those issues she has.
My more petty reason is that Neku is a citygirl who doesn’t really see nature on a daily basis, so suddenly forcing her to live in a garden is hilarious. I really just like the whole premise in general, and would like to trying playing here.
History: http://twewy.wikia.com/wiki/Neku_Sakuraba Taken from post-canon
Changes: Most of Neku’s history remains the same, but because of Japan’s rather strict and limited view on women, she gains a bit of a feminist streak (in contrast to the canon one, who honestly just doesn’t think about it). Though Japan has progressed a lot in women’s rights, especially since WWII, sexual harrassment in the workplace is still alarmingly common and there’s still an idea of the ‘ideal Japanese woman,’ being demure and yielding to their husbands and parents. Neku is entirely too strong willed to put up with that, and has been a blatant outlier for a while. Her parents got away with dressing her up as a child, but once she got older and capable of choosing her own clothes (especially once she hit puberty), she leaned towards more baggy (and as a result, often more boyish) clothing. (She has a couple of body issues latched onto that, partly because of how unhealithy skinny she looks all the time and partly because she doesn’t have much in the way of a chest, but she suppresses that as much as possible.) She cares almost nothing about trends and fashion, which is somewhat of a problem as a girl in Shibuya, and winds up pretty isolated at school. Her parents aren’t particularly supportive either, taking her ‘I do what I want’ kind of attitude as extreme disrespect. This ends up being her reason for disliking people so inherently, and her initial refusal to reach out and let people understand her. She and ‘Joshua’ are the only ones swapped in their universe.
Personality:
One of the most obvious traits Neku possesses is that she’s a loner. At the beginning of the game, she doesn’t play well with others, doesn’t trust them, doesn’t want to get to know them, and certainly doesn’t want to be around them. This changes through the course of the Game- she learns to open up to others, figures out she has to rely on and trust them, and manages to make friends. However, her patience for stupidity and general annoyances is still pretty low, and she isn’t about to go out and befriend everyone in Shibuya.
Related to this is the fact that Neku can seem abrasive to people. She puts up a cold front most of the time, and even when people get to know her what she says and how she says things can make her seem very standoff-ish. That fact that she is remarkably stubborn can either hurt him or help her too. On the one hand, if she wants to get something done, she will do almost anything (just short of killing a friend) in order to make that happen. On the other hand, it can just add to her abrasiveness, especially when the aim is to get someone to leave her alone.
One of the biggest themes in the game is trust, which is something Neku initially had a lot of trouble with. Now, however, it’s very important to her. She still doesn’t trust easily, but when you get that trust from her it’s unbreakable. She is fiercely loyal to the people he cares about. This doesn’t stop her from wanting to kill them when they do things she doesn’t like, but if someone is one of those few people they could say ‘do you trust me?’ and shut her up pretty quickly.
Something touched on (remarkably briefly) in the game is that Neku is very intelligent. (She has the square root of 3 memorized.) She’s also very appreciative of the arts, though she sometimes uses that to isolate herself from other people, namely by blasted music through her headphones.
Overall, Neku has a good heart, and when given reason to care, will act. Even though she gets annoyed with stupidity quickly, she’s willing to put up with and tolerate more than she would have before entering the Game. She doesn’t like a lot of people, but still respects that they have their own right to exist and have their own beliefs and dreams. She values her friends very highly, and ‘trust your partner’ has become a sort of mantra for her. She’s not perfect yet, not by any means, but is more willing than she once was to let her world grow, which she knows she can only do by opening up to others.
Abilities:
Neku has a variety of ‘psychs’ she can use to have a whole range of abilities. If she doesn’t have the pins on him, she can’t use them, and she can only use six pins at a time. She also has a Player Pin, which has three main uses: scanning for Noise (monsters), reading people’s surface thoughts, and ‘imprinting’ a word or idea into people’s heads to get them to think about it. It also protects him from having his thoughts read or being imprinted on. (These pins can persumably only be used in the UG, but I’m not sure where the Garden lies on that sort of thing.) She’s a pretty smart kid, and after three weeks of being in a life-or-death game, she has decent running stamina.
